My paintings are inspired and populated by stuffed animals, old toys,
vintage fabrics, medical illustrations and early medieval icon imagery.
The stuffed animals I collect are disheveled and discolored, and bear
a patina that can be interpreted as either that of love or neglect.
In my portraits of these toys, I foster and encourage this ambiguity,
and the resultant imagery remains open to emotional interpretation.
The flatness of my paintings and the isolation of objects in a void
or abstract, patterned space are reminiscent of both contemporary
advertising and medieval iconography; these techniques magnify
the significance of the subjects and increase their desirability,
but also render them slightly grotesque.
